Plateprat med Bazooka Joe

Musikkbibliotekar Olav Nilsen slår av en prat med Bazooka Joe.

Hi!
If someone buys you a drink, what do you drink?
A 7-11 cherry + Coca-Cola combined Slurpee, or coconut water served in a coconut.

If you were to write an autobiography one day, what would it be called?
«I Won»

If you want to get people on the dance floor, what song do you play?
Everything I play is geared towards dancefloor chaos, but it rarely works because I can’t seem to find a place to live that’s populated by people that want to dance to the best ever dancin’ junk. But in a perfect world they would dance to «Roaches» by The Judge ‘n Jury.

What is your relationship with libraries?
I married a librarian!

Five favorite albums?

1. THE BEATLES (tie) «The Beatles» / «Abbey Road»

2. PERREY & KINGSLEY «The In Sound From Way Out»

3. DE LA SOUL «3 Feet High and Rising»

4. CHARLES MINGUS «The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady»

5. THE MONKS «Black Monk Time»

Five favorite songs?

1. BOOKER T. and the MGs «Green Onions»

2. THE KINKS «You Really Got Me»

3. BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS «I’m Still #1»

4. BO DIDDLEY «Bo Diddley»

5. OBLIVIANS «And Then I Fucked Her»

What have you been listening to in the past few days?
Mixcloud sets from a UK cat by the name of Sad Eagle. My librarian wife turned me onto him.

Underrated album?
Probably «Forgive Thee» by Cheater Slicks since it’s a double album that only had a CD release.

A classic that you've never understood?
«Odessey and Oracle.» I tried to listen to it once, but it just sounded like pan flute fairy nonsense, but I also didn’t like The Mothers’ «Freak Out!» when I first heard it, but now it’s a major favorite.

Three favorite album covers?

1. «Oriental Dances Past & Present»

2. THE DAMNED «Damned Damned Damned»

3. ERIC DOLPHY «Out To Lunch»

Do you collect records? Why?
Well sure… that’s why we’re talking, right? Records are fun, and sometimes the fidelity on a killer track can crack your brains!

What is the most important difference from when you started collecting records and how it is now?
Collecting is no longer innocent due to the internet.

Favorite physical record store?
Goner Records in Memphis, TN.

Last purchased record?
Just a minute ago I bought two 45s from a Canadian seller on Discogs: The World Famous Upsetters (w/ Little Richard) «I’m In Love Again»

and Tracey Dey «Hanky Panky» (not to be confused with the Tommy James song).

Your best record purchase ever?
Back in the summer of 2016 I was in an antique store in York, PA in and bought a clean Platter Pack for $10 and it was filled with mint condition rockabilly and r&b radio promos, including «Showdown» by Tony Casanova (infamously compiled on «Sin Alley vol. 1») which had been on my wantlist for 20 years at that point. There were plenty of other great ones in that box, too. Sadly, I had to sell them all, but I got to hang onto the Casanova for 5 years and play it at a lot of parties.

Three records at the top of your Wantlist?

1. Robert Jay «Alcohol» (Jo Ann)

2. The Few «Escape» (Maestro)

3. The Monks «Black Monk Time» (International Polydor Production – I currently only have the great reissue from Light In The Attic)

The best guitar solo ever recorded?
Have you ever heard «I’m a Hog for You» by The Coasters?

Favorite song in another language or dialect?
Do «La Moomba Kasa Boo Boo Cha Cha Cha» and «Mama-Ka-Toko-Laka-Poo-Poo-Yay» count?

What about «Nina-Kocka-Nina» and «Kocka-Mow-Mow»?

The best lyricist? (Your favorite)
That guy from The Dinks.

Favorite movie?
BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS! I have the soundtrack LP, both 45s, a few lobby cards, and the DVD. I used to have a radio spot 45, but that dickhead Rich Rosen in Vegas took advantage of me whenI was just starting out in the record scene and he got it from me. Fuck that guy, he sucks.

Vinyl, CD, Cassette, or Streaming. What do you prefer?
Records for active listening at home and DJing, CDs for the car, streaming for kitchen time.

Are you an audio freak/audiophile?
As long as it’s loud and has cracking fidelity I’m good.

What do you play music on at home?
Record room: 2x Technics 1200s (or my computer) through a Marantz 2235B & Sansui SP-X8000 loudspeakers

Living room: Pioneer PL-570 through a Pioneer SX-737 & Sansui SP-2000 loudspeakers / strategically placed bluetooth speakers when it’s stream-time.

A mixtape/Spotify playlist to celebrate love, what three songs must be included?

1. Scientist «Your Teeth In My Neck»

2. Serge Gainsbourg «69 Année Érotique"

3. Marvin Gaye «Feel All My Love Inside»

Which three records have influenced/inspired you the most in the past three years?

1. Charles Mingus «The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady» (LP)

2. T.D.S. Mob «What’s The World Coming To» (12inch)

3. Don Snyder «Tiger A-Go-Go» (7inch)

A great playlist you want to share, why?
Not a playlist, but my mix DJ Bazooka Joe Presents «The Sexual I.Q. Test» which is my manifesto:

((( http://sloven.ly/the-sexual-iq-test )))

A high-concept / low-brow mix based on a clinical study LP from 1972 called "The Sexual I.Q. Test." This is break-beat and Hammond heavy 60s go-go, Latin boogaloo, French electronic jerk, Bollywood, funk, cumbia, Las Vegas Grind and soundtrack madness with X-rated sex sounds - everything pulled from original vinyl LPs and 45s, and recorded to a Yamaha MT4X multitrack cassette recorder.

Music books you would recommend and why?

«Black Monk Time» by Eddie Shaw (Monks bassist) for being the entire amazing first hand story behind the greatest ever 60s punk LP, and «Bass Culture» because Jamaican music has such a fun and fascinating history.

A memorable music moment?

Walking into a record store called The Underground (in Las Vegas where I grew up) in 1992 and they were playing «Heavens To Murgatroyd, Even! It’s Thee Headcoats! (Already)» LP. I was 19 years old and it changed my life forever. I tortured Las Vegas for the next seven years via my radio show The Chemical Lounge on KUNV with everything I was discovering.

Which concert will you never forget?
Asha Bhosle backed by The Kronos Quartet and Zakir Hussein, Carnegie Hall, 2006.

Favorite festival?
Gonerfest (Goner Records) and We’re Loud Fest (Slovenly Recordings).

Where would you like to travel to experience music?
The next We’re Loud Fest (in Kenya!).

How do you think your friends perceive your taste in music?
In line with their own, but just a hair worse.

Which record can you still put on when you're tired of music?
It’s a CD which I don’t own so I stream it on Youtube, but Terry Riley’s «You’re Nogood» where he manipulates «You’re No Good» by The Harvey Averne Dozen.

The best-dressed musician?
All members of The Ornette Coleman Quartet

and Puppy and the Hand Jobs.

Will you show us a tattoo?
I have a tattoo of the VON LMO symbol of universal sound.

What excites you?
Rare records in thrift stores, my wife, our two pugs, the next great meal.

Do you have any relationship with the record industry?
«It’s complicated»

Favorite record label?
CRYPT, BABY!

Who should I have the next record chat with?
Danny from The Gories.
